Smyrna history

 

Smyrna was incorporated originally in 1869. After the charter was rescinded by the state of Tennessee in later years, it was rec-incorporated in 1915.

The city played an important role during the Civil War with its railroad station located between Chattanooga and Nashville. 

During the second World War, Sewart Air Force Base was established in Smyrna. More than 10,000 were stationed at the base during the 1950s and 1960s. It was closed in 1971.

Originally a farming community, Smyrna began to grow in the 1970s with many new industries moving into the city. Nissan Motors built a manufacturing plant in Smyrna during the early 1980s. The plan employs more tha 8,400 workers.

For those with free time, Smryna offers much to do. It has 10 parks, seven miles of greenway trails, an outdoor waterpark, and public golf course. Lee Victory Recreation Park is one of the city’s most popular outdoor recreational places, with picnic pavillions, sports fields, the Greenway Trail for running and walking, and lighted tennis courts.

For history buffs, the Sam Davis House is a museum that honors the memory of Confederate soldier Sam Davis who grew up in the residence. It is loacted on 168 acres in downtown Smyrna. It is open year-round for social events and activities. Smyrna also has the Capt. Jeff Kuss USMC Memorial, which honors the city’s military aviation history.

Other places to visit includ the Buckle and Hide Leather shop, Walden Pumpkin Farm, Stars and Strikes indoor family entertainment center, and the Smyrna Skate Center.
