In the early 19th century, the city grew as a manufacturing center and river trade depot for middle Tennessee. It also became a political center for the state.

During the American Civil War, Nashville was occupied by Union troops in February 1862. This battle ended in a Union victory over the Confederate forces led by General J.B. Hood. Since then, the city has become a major transportation, business, and cultural center for the Middle Tennessee region.

After the Civil War, the city’s population continued to grow. It continued to become an important shipping and wholesale center.

Education in Nashville also grew significantly during this time. In 1866, Fisk University became one of the first institutions in the south to dedicate itself to African American education. Later, other institutions were established, including Vanderbilt University, Peabody College, Belmont University, Lipscomb University, and Trevecca Nazarene University.

In 1876, the city also became home to Meharry Medical College, which educated black doctors.
